Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:44 am, the temperature is 40 degrees.
Today will be sunny with a high temperature in the middle 50’s and a low tonight in the low 30’s. It will be sunny tomorrow with a high in the upper 40’s and a low in the low 30’s.
Little River is flowing at 919 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.18 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 338 cfs. The water temperature is 48.9 degrees this morning.
Streams in the Smokies rose to high levels yesterday. They are receding now, but the water is still high and swift in most streams. Water temperatures have dropped somewhat. Yesterday at this time, the water temperature in Little River was 52.5 degrees. This morning, the gauge site near Townsend is reporting 48.9 degrees.
Water temperatures will fall tonight.
What we have today are not ideal fishing conditions in most streams. If you go, stand in safe water casting weighted nymph rigs or streamers. Be careful wading.
You will find higher than normal water in the low elevation streams that have been stocked with trout. Safe wading will be limited. Weighted nymph rigs or streamers are good fly choices.
There will be pauses in the generation at several dams today, offering tailwater anglers some options. Refer to the TVA website from the links below to choose a tailwater to fish and plan carefully.
We didn’t have many customers in the shop yesterday, but we were busy filling and shipping mail orders. Customers were ordering a lot of fly tying materials and tackle. During January and February, we see more customers on weekends and much less on weekdays.
Nobody knows when Spring fly fishing will crank up this year. When water temperatures climb to and are sustained at about 50 degrees, the Spring hatches will begin. Trout will be active. Anglers will be catching trout on nymphs, emergers, wet flies and dry flies.
Some years we have the right conditions in late February. More often, the Spring hatches begin in March and sometimes in late March. Fly Fishing Spring will occur in the low elevations first, where the water is warmer.
The average high temperature here in January is 47 degrees. The average low temperature is 27 degrees. I am looking at the long term weather forecast through January 19th. If the forecast holds true, it will be much warmer than normal during the period.
Rob Fightmaster will be conducting a FREE fly tying demonstration Sunday, between 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm at the shop. Rob is a professional fly fishing guide who specializes in Smokies fly fishing. He is an excellent fly tyer who has developed some very effective patterns his clients use in the mountains. You don’t need to make a reservation to attend his demonstration.
