Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:43 am, the temperature is 36 degrees.
Today will be sunny and cooler with a high temperature in the upper 40’s and a low tonight in the low 30’s. Tomorrow will be mostly cloudy with a high in the low 50’s and a low chance for rain. Rain is likely tomorrow night with temperatures falling to the upper 30’s. Rain is likely Sunday with a high in the lower 50’s.
Little River is flowing at 553 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.73 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 311 cfs. The water temperature is 45.3 degrees this morning.
Streams in the Smokies are receding though most are flowing higher than normal for this date. Some are flowing higher than many anglers prefer. It is cooler, so water temperatures are falling. The water temperature in Little River dropped by over 3 degrees since yesterday morning.
If you go fishing in the mountains today, stand in safe water casting weighted nymphs or streamers. Fish in the lower elevations where the water is warmer.
Fishing for stocked trout in the lower elevations is probably fair. The rivers are flowing higher than normal and water temperatures have cooled. Weighted nymphs or nymph rigs are going to work best for you, though streamers may produce as well.
Smallmouth bass fishing in the lowland rivers is likely slow. Wading is limited and the water is colder than the fish prefer.
There are pauses in the generation planned at some dams today. Unfortunately, Norris Dam is not one of them. You may be able to work with the flows on some tailwaters. Visit the TVA website from the links below to see what tailwater fishing opportunities are available.
The long term weather forecast is still projecting warmer than normal temperatures through January 20th. We will probably get some rain often during the period.
Guide Rob Fightmaster will be conducting a FREE fly tying demonstration Sunday between 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm at the shop. No reservation is needed. Just show up. Rob guides most of his clients in the Smoky Mountains. You will enjoy spending the afternoon with Rob.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
