Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:37 am, the temperature is 30 degrees.
Today will be mostly cloudy with a slight chance for rain and a high temperature in the upper 40’s. There is a marginal chance for rain tonight with a low in the low 40’s. There is a high chance for rain tomorrow, with rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch. The high temperature will be in the middle 50’s, dropping to the middle 30’s overnight.
Little River is flowing at 401 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.49 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 317 cfs. The water temperature is 42.4 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing at or higher than normal for this date. Water temperatures are chilly, below the trout’s preferred range and falling this morning.
Fishing conditions in the Smokies are not ideal, but you may still catch trout. I would go prepared to use weighted nymphs or tandem nymph rigs. Streamers may also be a good fly choice. It is possible you may see blue wing olives or other aquatic insects on the water. I don’t think trout will be rising to the adult insects, but it is possible.
Fishing for stocked trout in the lower elevations may be fair or better. Weighted nymphs or nymph rigs are what I would use. You may want to try small nymphs or midge pupa and light tippet. Vary the depth of your flies to get down to where the trout are holding. Personally, I would not use a strike indicator so I could easily vary the depth. Of utmost importance is getting a good drift and drifting your flies at the right depth.
I think fishing for smallmouth bass in the lowland rivers will be slow due to the cool water temperatures.
I see some interesting generation schedules at some dams, possibly offering tailwater angling options for you. I noticed pauses in the generation at South Holston, Dale Hollow, Wolf Creek, Cherokee and Center Hill dams today. Pay close attention to the schedules and plan accordingly. You may be able to work with what TVA and the Corps are offering us today.
Plan on visiting the shop tomorrow afternoon. Guide Rob Fightmaster will be holding a FREE fly tying demonstration between 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm. Rob guides most of his clients in the Smoky Mountains and has for many years.
Even if you are a fly tying beginner, you can learn from the fly tying demonstrations we are holding on the weekends. I try to encourage beginners to show up and learn from these pros.
These events are free. You don’t need to do anything but show up.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
