Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:44 am, the temperature is 43 degrees.
It will be cloudy this morning and clearing later this afternoon with a high temperature in the upper 40’s, falling to the upper 20’s tonight. Tomorrow will be sunny and warmer. The high temperature will be in the middle 50’s with a low in the 30’s. Wednesday will be warmer, in the low 60’s and a low in the 50’s. Expect rain Thursday with a high in the 60’s. Friday will be cold with a chance for rain and snow showers.
We got plenty of rain yesterday, .92 inches in Townsend.
Little River is flowing at 665 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.88 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 296 cfs. The water temperature is 47.7 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing higher than normal. Little Pigeon River is still rising right now. Most streams are receding. Water temperatures are fairly warm in the low elevations.
If you go fishing in the mountains today, weighted nymphs or tandem nymph rigs are good fly choices. You might want to try streamers too. The streams are swift, so be careful wading.
Fishing for stocked trout in the low elevations may be good today. Wading will be limited due to the higher than normal flows. I would use weighted tandem nymph rigs, fished using a tight line or Euro style tactic, without a strike indicator. Vary the depth of your nymphs, to get down where the trout are holding. If the trout are not taking larger nymphs, go smaller.
I have talked to a lot of customers who have been fishing in the stocked rivers this Fall and Winter. Most I heard from were fishing in Gatlinburg or the Tellico River. I feel certain that is the case in Cherokee and other stocked delayed harvest streams.
There are pauses in the generation schedules at several dams today. Check the schedules at Cherokee, Douglas, Norris, Dale Hollow, South Holston and Chatuge dams. You might be able to work with these schedules and spend some time fishing on a tailwater.
The long term weather forecast through January 23rd is encouraging. We will have a couple of cold days later this week. Beyond that, temperatures are predicted to be much warmer than normal. Rain is in the forecast most days during the period.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
