Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:42 am, the temperature is 30 degrees.
This is going to be a beautiful day. It will be partly sunny with a high temperature around 60 degrees and a low tonight in the upper 40’s. We have a slight chance for showers tonight. It is definitely going to rain tomorrow and through tomorrow night. It will be breezy tomorrow. Rainfall amounts between a half inch and three quarters of an inch are possible.
Friday will bring us cooler temperatures with a high around 40 and a low in the middle 20’s overnight. We have a chance for rain Friday and a slight chance for snow overnight.
The weekend will be sunny. Expect a high in the low 40’s Saturday dropping to the low 20’s. Sunday will be warmer, in the low 50’s.
Little River is flowing at 407 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.50 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 310 cfs. The water temperature is 43.0 degrees and steady.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing higher than normal but they have receded to much better fishing levels. Water temperatures are chilly this morning. Trout will be lethargic, especially early today. We should see some warming of the water and hopefully fishing will improve later today. Weighted nymphs or tandem nymph rigs will probably work best for you. Also, try small nymphs or midge pupa patterns. Fish in the lower elevations where the water is warmer.
If you are planning to fish in the low elevation rivers that are stocked with trout, you will likely do better later today when the water is warmer. These rivers are flowing fairly high and swift. Weighted nymph rigs may work best and you should also try using smaller nymphs or midge pupa.
TVA and the Corps have scheduled breaks in the generation at many dams this afternoon. The duration of the pauses varies from three hours to much longer. Click on your favorite tailwater from the links below and you may be pleasantly surprised.
We have free fly tying demonstrations scheduled both Saturday and Sunday this weekend. The Saturday demonstration features Mike Wallace who will be tying between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. Mike lives in Bristol, Tennessee. He enjoys tying traditional patterns, including some really beautiful wet flies. His flies are sold at fly shops, including ours.
Will Davis will be tying Sunday between 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm. Many of you probably know Will. He worked at the shop with me, organizing and maintaining the fly tying department before going to college last Fall. Will is an advanced Euro nymphing angler. He is also an excellent fly tyer.
Our Winter fly tying demonstrations are free. All you have to do is show up. There is a link to our entire Winter fly tying demonstration schedule below.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
