Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:34 am, the temperature is 57 degrees.
It will be windy and warm today with a high temperature in the middle 60’s. The chance for rain today is 100%, with expected rainfall totals between one half of an inch to three quarters of an inch.
A cold front will move in tonight as rain continues, with a low temperature in the low 30’s. Rain will transition to snow showers with accumulations expected in the higher elevations.
Rain and snow are predicted tomorrow. The high temperature will be in the middle to upper 30’s in the foothills. There is a chance for snow tomorrow night with a low in the low to middle 20’s.
Saturday will be cold, in the upper 30’s dropping to the low 20’s overnight. Sunday will be sunny and warmer with a high in the low 50’s.
The high elevations, specifically the forecast at Newfound Gap, is under a wind advisory through today. Additionally, the high elevations are under a Winter Storm Warming tonight through Friday night.
Little River is flowing at 337 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.37 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 317 cfs. The water temperature is 47.1 degrees this morning and steady.
Streams in the mountains have receded to near normal to slightly above normal for this date. The water has been warming and that should continue today.
Except for the rain and wind, this may be a fair to good fishing day due to the warming water. Wind gusts up to 25 miles per hour may occur in the foothills. Gusts up to 45 miles per hour are possible In the high elevations.
If you go fishing in the Smokies today, weighted nymphs or nymphs rigs are a good choice. You may see hatches of blue wing olives or other aquatic insects, so be ready for that if it happens. Fish in the low elevations where the water is warmer.
Fishing for stocked trout in the low elevations may be good today. Weighted nymphs or tandem nymph rigs should be the ticket. If you see trout ignoring your nymphs, downsize your flies and tippet size. Get your flies down to where you see the stocked trout holding.
TVA and the Corps will be generating all day at most dams. There are pauses planned at a few dams today. Visit the TVA website to see what is going on at your favorite tailwater.
We have two free fly tying demonstrations planned this weekend. Mike Wallace will be tying Saturday, between 10 am and 2 pm. Will Davis will be tying Sunday, between 1 pm and 3 pm. These demonstrations are free. You don’t need a reservation. Just show up at the shop.
There is a chance for bad weather that may affect travel. Mike lives in Bristol. Will lives in Alcoa. If we have a cancellation due to slippery roads, I will post it on this report, unless our power or internet goes out. If in doubt about the chance there is a cancellation, and you don’t see it here, call the shop at 865-448-9459 before coming.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
