Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:35 am, the temperature is 42 degrees.
Heavy rain and strong thunderstorms blew into the area yesterday. Rainfall totals in Townsend amounted to between 1.16 inches to 1.83 inches. It is raining now.
The high temperature today will be what it is now. Rain and snow are likely today in the lower elevations. Rain will change to snow later this morning before changing back to rain according to the National Weather Service. “Little to no accumulations are expected across the lower elevations of the Tennessee Valley”.
There is a 50% chance for snow tonight with a low in the low to middle 20’s in the low elevations.
Tomorrow (Saturday) there is a low chance for snow with a high temperature in the upper 30’s. It will be cloudy early before clearing later in the day.
Sunday will be mostly sunny with a high in the upper 40’s dropping to the upper 20’s overnight. Monday will be sunny with a high in the middle 50’s.
The high elevations are under a Winter Storm Warning. Newfound Gap Road is closed. Predicted snow accumulations in the high elevations last night through today may be between 11 and 24 inches according to the National Weather Service.
Little River is flowing at 1,600 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 4.06 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 315 cfs. The water temperature is 48.7 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River at the Sevierville gauge is flowing at 4,590 cfs or 5.42 feet. Median flow for this date is 490 cfs.
Oconauftee River at the Birdtown gauge is flowing at 1,310 cfs, 5.42 feet, compared to median flow of 550 cfs.
Tellico River is flowing at 886 cfs, 2.89 feet, compared to median flow of 260 cfs for this date.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 324 cfs, 3.34 feet, compared to median flow of 125 cfs.
Most if not all stream in the mountains are flowing high. They are receding. There is a chance for more road closings in the Smokies today and tonight. This is probably not a good day to be fishing in the mountains.
Many lowland rivers where trout are stock are flowing high.
TVA and the Corps will be generating all day at many dams but there are a few exceptions. Unless the schedules change, there are long pauses planned to Norris, Chatuge and Dale Hollow dams. There may be other tailwater fishing options. Check the TVA website before you go and plan accordingly.

We will be holding many free fly tying demonstrations on the weekends over the next two months, some on Saturdays and others on Sunday afternoons.
