Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature is 30 degrees.
It will be cloudy early with a chance for snow showers. Later today, it will be mostly sunny with a high temperature in the upper 30’s. It will be clear tonight with a low in the high teens. Tomorrow will be mostly sunny with a high in the upper 40’s.
Some roads in Great Smoky Mountains National Park are closed due to snow and ice. The closed roads include Laurel Creek Road to Cades Cove, Gatlinburg Bypass, Little River Road from Sugarlands to Metcalf Bottoms and Newfound Gap Road from Gatlinburg to Cherokee.
Little River is flowing at 1,220 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.57 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 299 cfs. The water temperature is 42.6 degrees and falling.
Streams in the mountains are flowing higher than normal. The rivers are swift and wading is limited. Access to many streams is not available due to closed roads. Water temperatures are cold.
If you go fishing in the mountains today where you can find stream access, stand in safe water casting weighted nymph rigs. Don’t expect much trout activity today. Stay close to your vehicle where you should have dry clothing to change into if you get wet.
Fishing for stocked trout in the low elevations may be possible, but the streams are swift and water temperatures are plunging.
There are pauses in the generation planned at some dams today. If you hope to fish on a tailwater, you have some options at varying times. Visit the TVA website to see what tailwater fishing opportunities you have. Stay close to your vehicle where there is a change of warm dry clothing.
Mike Wallace will be offering you a free fly tying demonstration at the shop today between 10 am and 2 pm. He is an excellent fly tyer. What I have seen is his specialty for tying traditional flies, those that you would use in the Smokies. We buy some of his patterns to sell in the shop. His demonstration is free. All you have to do is show up.
Will Davis will be conducting a free fly tying demonstration tomorrow between 1 pm and 3 pm. Will is an excellent Euro style angler and fly tyer. He has demonstrated his skills at fly tying shows, including the Atlanta Fly Fishing Show. All you have to do is show up at the shop to watch Will and talk to him as he ties.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
