Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:39 am, the temperature is 25 degrees.
It will be partly cloudy today with a high temperature in the middle 50’s, falling to the low 40’s tonight. Showers will move into the area late tonight. Showers are likely tomorrow with a high in the low 60’s and a low in the upper 40’s overnight. Wednesday will be mostly cloudy and warm with a high in the middle to upper 60’s.
Little River is flowing at 560 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.74 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 264 cfs. The water temperature is 40.64 degrees and steady.
Little River Road between Townsend and Sugarlands is now open. Some other roads that were temporarily closed due to snow and ice have re-opened. You can get updates on the Park’s Roads Twitter page by CLICKING HERE.
Most streams in the mountains are still flowing higher than normal. The streams have warmed somewhat, but remain below the trout’s preferred temperature range. The streams will warm over the next couple of days.
If you go fishing in the mountains today, stand in safe water casting weighted nymphs or streamers.
Fishing for stocked trout in the low elevation rivers will improve over the next few days as the water warms. If you go, try weighted nymphs or nymph rigs.
TVA and the Corps will be generating all day at many dams though I did see a couple of schedules with planned pauses later today. The exceptions I saw were Cherokee and Wolf Creek dams. There may be others. Visit the TVA website from the links below to see if you can work in some fishing time on your favorite tailwater.
The shop will be open today from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm. This is the MLK holiday so I expect we will be busy.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
