Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature is 30 degrees.
The low temperature was predicted to be in the low 20’s this morning. It is much warmer than that. Maybe it will get colder before daybreak.
Today will be sunny with a high temperature in the middle 40’s, falling to the low 30’s tonight. Tomorrow will be sunny and warmer with a high in the middle to upper 50s and a low in the upper 30’s overnight. Rain is in the forecast Sunday. The high temperature will be in the low 50’s with a low in the low 40’s overnight.
Little River is flowing at 634 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.88 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 322 cfs. The water temperature is 41.9 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing higher than normal and with more cfs of discharge than most anglers prefer. Water temperatures are below the trout’s preferred range.
If you decide to fish in the Smokies today, you will encounter swift and cold streams. Stand in safe water casting weighted nymphs, tandem nymph rigs or streamers. Trout will be lethargic due to the cold water temperatures. Fish in the lower elevations where the water is warmer.
Fishing for stocked trout in the low elevation streams may be difficult due to limited wading conditions. Stocked trout seem to be more adaptable to the colder water so they may be more active than the wild fish in the mountains. Try weighted nymph rigs. Stand in safe water. Use high sticking or Euro nymphing techniques.
Visit the TVA website to see the generation schedules at your favorite tailwater. I noticed pauses in the generation at Wilbur, Wolf Creek, Dale Hollow, Chatuge and South Holston Dams when I checked this morning. Some of these pauses are scheduled later this morning or early afternoon. Maybe you can work with them and squeeze in some tailwater fishing today.
We will be holding free fly tying demonstrations at the shop tomorrow and Sunday.
Hunter Palmer will be tying Saturday from 10 am until 2 pm. Hunter is a professional guide from Gatlinburg who takes his clients fishing in the Smoky Mountains and nearby rivers.
Steve Gregg will be demonstrating Sunday between 1 pm and 3 pm. Steve is a fly tying instructor working at the Orvis store in Sevierville. He will be tying his favorite flies used in the mountains and tailwaters.
You do not need an appointment to attend these free demonstrations. Just show up at the shop.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
