Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:39 am, the temperature is 43 degrees.
Rainfall amounted to .60 inches in Townsend yesterday and last night.
We have a chance for more rain this morning before ending at around 11:00 am. The high temperature today will be in the middle 50’s, dropping to the low 40’s overnight. Rain is likely tomorrow with a high in the upper 40’s falling to the upper 30’s overnight. More rain is expected Wednesday through Thursday night.
Little River is flowing at 407 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.50 feet on the gauge. We consider 2.50 feet on the high side of good in Little River. Median flow for this date is 298 cfs. The water temperature is 45.1 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are flowing higher than normal and some are rising slowly. The streams warmed some yesterday and they are continuing to warm. Water temperatures are still below the trout’s preferred range at all elevations this morning.
If you go fishing in the Smokies today, you will find swift water in some streams or areas in most streams. Be careful wading. You will probably do best using weighted nymphs or tandem nymph rigs, fished Euro style or “high sticking”. Streamers might also work for you.
The same is true for stocked trout in the low elevation rivers. Stand in safe water casting weighted nymph rigs or streamers. If the streams continue to warm today, fishing for stocked trout will be fair and possibly good unless the river you choose is flowing too high.
TVA and the Corps will be generating all day at many dams with some exceptions. There are breaks in the generation planned at Norris, Dale Hollow and Chatuge dams. Check the TVA website before you go. Generation schedules may change. Maybe you can work in some tailwater fishing today.
We are holding a Beginner Fly Tying Class Saturday February 18th starting at 9:00 am. Tools and materials will be furnished for you. The class is limited to 4 students. It will be taught by Brian Courtney, who has been teaching this class for many years. The cost of the class is $100. It will last all day. We will provide lunch for you. You will learn to tie 5 different flies and acquire the skills to tie many more similar patterns. Call the shop at 865-448-9459 to reserve your spot. If the class is full when you call, ask to be put on a waiting list in case there is a cancellation.
Waders and wading boots were in short supply during the last two years. We placed a large pre-season order with Simms for Spring delivery. A lot of that order has already arrived at the shop with more coming soon. We have more waders and wading boots in stock right now than I can remember at this point in the Winter. We have maintained our stock of all gear through the Winter months. The shop is very well stocked. Now is a good time to be shopping with us.
We are having a very busy January, compared to last year.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
