Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:40 am, the temperature is 39 degrees.
There is a chance for rain this morning with a high temperature in the low 40’s. We have a 40% chance for rain tonight with a low in the upper 30’s. Rain is likely tomorrow and overnight, with a high temperature in the upper 40’s and a low in the high 20’s. Friday will be sunny with a high around 40 degrees.
Laurel Creek Road, the route to Cades Cove was closed due to a rock slide. The road reopened later yesterday morning.
Little River is flowing at 526 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.68 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 305 cfs. Little River is currently rising. The water temperature is 47.5 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains that have USGS gauge sites are flowing higher than normal and rising. It is hard to determine how much the streams will rise today. The chance for more rain is fairly low. They may peak and recede soon. Water temperatures warmed yesterday but they will not likely warm further today.
If you go fishing in the Smokies today, you will find swifter than normal water conditions. Be careful wading. Stand in safe water to fish. Weighted nymphs, tandem nymph rigs and possibly streamers are good fly choices.
Fishing for stocked trout in the lower elevation rivers may be fair or better today due to the warmer water conditions. The rivers are swift. Stand in safe water casting weighted nymphs, nymph rigs or streamers.
Tailwater fishing opportunities are limited today. TVA and the Corps will be generating all day at most dams. TVA will be sluicing approximately 6,000 cfs at Norris Dam and they state on the website that will be the case until further notice. I saw a pause in the generation at Dale Hollow and Chatuge dams. I do not check every schedule so there may be other options. Visit the site from the links below to see what is going on at your favorite tailwater.
