Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:44 am, the temperature is 39 degrees.
Rainfall over the past 24 hours has amounted to .35 inches in Townsend.
Rain will continue today. We may get up to half of an inch. The high temperature will be around 40 degrees. The rain will end tonight and it will be colder, with a low in the upper 20’s. Tomorrow will be sunny with a high in the upper 30’s and a low in the low 20’s. Saturday will be sunny and warmer.
Little River is flowing at 574 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.76 feet at the Townsend gauge. Median flow for this date is 313 cfs. The water temperature is 45.7 degrees and falling.
Streams in the mountains are flowing higher than normal and rising. Water temperatures are falling. The streams will continue to chill over the next couple of days.
If you go fishing in the mountains today, stand in safe water casting weighted nymphs, tandem nymph rigs or streamers.
Most low elevation rivers are flowing higher than normal. The rivers are swift. Fishing for stocked trout may be fair. Stand in safe water casting weighted nymph rigs or streamers.
TVA and the Corps will be generating or sluicing at most dams today. I found a couple of exceptions where pauses are planned. Check the schedule at Dale Hollow and Chatuge dams. There may be others so visit the TVA website yourself and hopefully you can find a tailwater with angler friendly flows today.
The long term weather forecast indicates temperatures will be much warmer than normal beginning next week. Unless the weather pattern changes, we will enjoy several days with highs in the 60’s through February 16th.
When the water temperature rises to near 50 degrees, and that temperature is sustained, the Spring hatches will begin. Trout will be actively feeding. Some years, that has happened in late February. This may be one of those years.
We are holding a Beginner Fly Tying Class Saturday February 18th starting at 9:00 am. Tools and materials will be furnished for you. The class is limited to 4 students. It will be taught by Brian Courtney, who has been teaching this class for many years. The cost of the class is $100. It will last all day. We will provide lunch for you. If the class is full when you call, ask to be put on a waiting list in case there is a cancellation.
